Should we be afraid of bedbugs?
Bed bugs are a silent scourge affecting a growing number of travelers and households. They don't transmit diseases, but they cause itching, stress, and infestations that are difficult to eradicate.
Understanding the Bed Bug Problem
What is a bed bug ? They are small, brown insects, about the size of an apple seed, with an oval body. They don't fly or jump, but they move quickly.
Lifestyle : They feed exclusively on human blood, usually at night. They can survive for several months without feeding.
Where are they found ? They hide in mattresses, box springs, baseboards, furniture, suitcases, or clothing...
Symptoms : Bites appear on the skin in lines or clusters, usually followed by itching. You may also sometimes see traces on sheets, and small black specks (their droppings) on linens or furniture.
Their resurgence is linked to increased travel and their growing resistance to insecticides.
Is the Camino de Santiago affected by bedbugs?
Pilgrims and hikers from all over France are particularly at risk: hostels, guesthouses, hotels, and even public transportation can be breeding grounds for infestations. Cleanliness is not a determining factor: even a spotless place can be infested.
What is the real psychological and social impact ?
Even though they don't transmit diseases, bedbugs cause a lot of stress, insomnia, and often social isolation. Many people hesitate to talk about it for fear of stigmatization, even though it's a collective problem and not a matter of poor hygiene on the part of those affected.
Practical Advice for Pilgrims and Travelers
1- Before Departure :
- Pack your clothes in separate compartments if possible. (I personally use plastic bags to separate my clothing categories.)
- Use insect repellent (preferably organic, such as Puressentiel or Clako Bedbug, which are plant-based products) and regularly spray the outside of your backpack and especially the inside (particularly your sleeping gear).
2- During Your Trip :
- Upon arrival at each accommodation, check the bed and mattress (seams, bed frames, baseboards).
- Place your bag on a chair or table rather than on the floor or the bed.
- Avoid placing your clothes directly on the bed.
3- If You Suspect an Infestation :
- Do not move infested items to prevent the spread of pests.
- Inform the establishment, your family, friends, and fellow travelers.
- Wash your clothes at a minimum of 60°C (140°F) and dry them on high heat.
- If possible, freeze certain sensitive items (textiles and small accessories) for 72 hours.
4- Once home :
- Carefully inspect your belongings.
- Vacuum your suitcases and wash your clothes immediately upon arrival.
- If an infestation is confirmed, contact a qualified professional without delay; this intervention is often essential to get rid of bed bugs permanently.
